Statistical Analysis on Cancer Patients of Korea Cancer Center Hospital

This study was conducted on the basis of medical records registered at Korea Cancer Center Hospital for l0 years from the year of 1984 to 1993. The objectives are to centralized all cancer patients admitted to this hospital, to collect clinical data systematically for future cancer researches, and to carry out follow-up studies for the efficient care of cancer patients and for the evaluation of the effect of treatment modality. The results of this study(1984-1993) were obtained as follows; The total number of malignant neoplasms was 53,566 cases(14.1%) among 379,582 new patients visited Korea Cancer Center Hospital for 10 years. Male patients were 48.7% and female patients 51.3%. In terms of residency, the cancer patients in Seoul and Gyounggi province including Inchon was 34.6/ and 24.7%, respectively. The peak age frequency was 6th decade in both sexes(male 35.0%, female 28.4%). The most frequent primary organ among males was stomach with 33.2%, followed by liver(15.l%), lung(14.9%), esophagus(5.3%) and larynx(3.3%). In females, the first order was uterine cervix with 37.8%, followed by stomach(16.5%), breast(14.8%), rectum(4.3%) and lung(3.8%). Among cancer patients initially treated in Korea Cancer Center Hospital, the proportion of most patients(92.8%) was diagnosed by cytology and tissue biopsy. The most common type of morphology of malignant neoplasms was adenocarcinoma(44.6%) in males, and squamous cell carcinoma(46.0%) in females. The most frequent histological type in digestive organs was adenocarcinoma(72.9%), squamous cell carcinoma(58.4%) in respiratory system and squamous cell carcinoma(78.6%) in oro-pharyngeal region for males. In females, the most common histological type was squamous cell carcinoma(85.4%) in genitourinary organs. Among the cancer patients initially diagnosed and/or treated in this hospital, the proportion of malignant neoplasms by the extent of diseases was 3.7% for patients with carcinoma-in-situ, 58.7% for patients with localized spread, 18.4/ for patients with regional spread and 11.1'3 for patients with distant spread. 27.8% of the patients underwent operation, 22.5% were treated with radiation and 30.1% with chemotherapy, but most patients were treated with multimodality therapy.
