- A very rare spontaneous transplantable salivary adenocarcimoma wss found four years ago in the right submaxillary region of a untreated male albino moase bred in Seoul area. At autopsy, tumor, 2. 0 cm. in greatest diameter, was nodular, whitish-pink- and noneneapsulated, and proved to be arisen from salivary gland. Microscopically, the tumor was of a relatively well differentiated adenocarcinoma with extensive necrosis. Thegrowth was composed of acini, cords and sheets of cells supported by thin strands of fibrous stroma. Transplantabilities to mice were 13.5% in the original albino strain, 0% in DBA/2N, 6.8% in C3HHeN, 16.4% in C3H/HeN, 22.2% in N:GP(SW), and 100% in both C57BL/6N and BDF1 hybrid. The tumor line was maintained in C57BL/6N by transfering in average every 29.7 days and average survival time of these mice was 57 days. Hence, it is believed that this new transplantable spontaneous salivary adenocarcinoma will be a suitable model for investigations in the field of experimantal oncology.

- The transplantabilities and histological characteristics of a spontaneous transplantable liposarcoma were studied. The tumor was found in the intraperitoneal space of a C3H/HeN female mouse about two years ago during the breeding of inbred animals from the stocks supplied by National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, U.S.A. Grossly, the tumor had whitish-pink or yellowish surface and the tumor tissue was firm. Microscopically it consisted of compactly arranged spindle shaped cells with frequent lipid granules or droplets in the cytoplasm. Even after many continous transplantation, the original histological findings were maintained. Thistumor is transplantable 100 percent in both sexes of the original C3H/HeN mice. However, the percentage of take was reduced to 10 percent in C3H/HeN , 20 percent in DBA/2N, and 25 percent in C3Hf/HeN mice. The transplantability in non-inbred N:GP (SW) mice was 10 percent and BDF1 hybrid mice 36.8 percent. The average transfer day in C3H/HeN mice was 25.6 days, and the average survival time of the transplanted animals was 40 days. The tumor has been carried through 30th transplant generations. It is expected that this transplantable tumor will be useful in the studies of immunotherapy and chemotherap of mesenehymal tumor as well as histogenesis research of liposarcoma.

- Patients with histologically proved, wide-spread mctastatic yrostate carcinoma were treated with mithramyein or actinomycin D. All the patients had been previously treated with bilateral orchiectomy nnd/or intensive estrogen therapy. At the time of the chemotherapy, the diseases were in relapse. Among the six patients treated with mithramycin, all of them experienced signifieant reduction of serum acid phosphatase level. The responses were brief in duration, however it was accompanied by a substantial relief of bone pain. The lowering of eleveted serum acid phosphatase value was more pronounced and prolonged when Thiotepa (triethylene thiophosphorarnide) was given in conjunction with daily intravenws drip of mithramycin for one week. Further exploration of this regimen is warranted for the treatment of the patients who have shown relapse following thr standard therapy.

Abstract

- There is significant impairment of immune competence in the patients with weight loss even if the degree of weight loss is not so marked as that of those patients with protein-calorie malnutrition. In cancer patients, there is significant correlation between the presence of weight loss and the impaired reactivity to DNCB, as in the patients with non-neoplastic disease, furthermore, this relationship is supplemented by the fact that the absolute T-lymphocyte count is significantly lower in cancer patients with concomitant weight loss than that of normal subjects. As the recommendation for the patient with malnutrition, protein repletion by intravenous feeding or other means should be highly considered in cancer patients with weight loss who were scheduled to undergo operation, to improve their immunocompetence and to decrease the possible chance of malignant cell metastasis.
